What’s Your Bushel?

“And no man, when he hath lighted a lamp, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but putteth it on a stand, that they that enter in may see the light. For nothing is hid, that shall not be made manifest; nor [anything] secret, that shall not be known and come to light. Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that which he thinketh he hath.”

—Luke 8:16-18

I’m not one to normally quote from the Bible, having never actually  read it. But I’ve been  thinking about this idea of hiding your light under a bushel, so I thought I’d try and find out what a “bushel” is.

As it turns out, its a bowl, or any “vessel” that blocks out the light and stops others seeing it. Huh. I thought it would be a small bush!

I know you’ve got light inside you, but I’m sure you’re not showing it off as brightly as you could do.

What’s keeping you from shining? What’s holding you back?

What’s your bushel?

That’s the question I want you to think about today. Your inner talents and skills can help people. You could make someone’s life brighter, or easier, or happier. But first you need to break your bushel open. You need to overcome your fears and stop holding back.

If you want to publish your writing, but you’re too afraid of what other people might think about it (my hand’s up!)… get over it! Right now, get some of your best writing and send it to a friend, asking them what they think. Chances are, they’ll love it. If not, they’re not the right recipient for that writing.

Same goes if you want to sing in public. Just do it. Even the most average buskers tend to make at least £20 per hour in city centres (according to Dr Google).  And Britain’s Got Talent is always looking for new singers to entertain the public. What a great way to break your bushel!

If your bushel is money related, or lack of support from your family, don’t worry. The internet is an amazing place, full of people ready and waiting to be your cheerleaders. You just have to put yourself out there and they will find you.

Do what you can today, even if it means setting up a free website through a site like Wix or Weebly (no affiliate links here, I promise). Or you could put a status on your Facebook page, asking for people to help you. You might be surprised by the response.

What’s the worst that can happen?

I’ll tell you: the worst that can happen is not very bad at all. You might be criticised for putting yourself out there, by people who are too scared to do the same, and are secretly jealous of your courage. But I guarantee that your confidence will increase, and you’ll be glad you took the chance.

If you have a dream, and are holding back out of fear, then stop it! You’re just being selfish, and you don’t want to be selfish, do you? You want people to like you? Then follow your dream. Be yourself and great things will happen.

Go on, Break that Bushel Now!
